“I experience a sense of belonging when I create. My works give me the feeling that others share a similar view of the world. A lot of unexpected friendships have been formed as a result of my art. The art of storytelling, manifesting and believing, allows the connection. Connecting is what we are all looking for, so I hope to build those connections with my viewers through my art.”

Catherine
Painting is titled “Relaxing Roses.” Her mentor artist is Kristine Reiner.
What is Catherine’s inspiration for her artwork? “Flowers are pretty, and they can be so calming.”
Catherine was diagnosed with systemic onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis when she was 4 years old at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Although Catherine lives in Iowa, she sees Dr. Thomas Mason at Mayo every 6 months when her juvenile arthritis is calm. Catherine goes to the hospital every 4 weeks for an infusion that costs $10,000. As painful as this process can be, Catherine is grateful for the nurses and child life staff who help to make her visits fun. Catherine is 11 years old, in the 6th grade and is home-schooled. She has 2 sisters and 3 brothers ranging in age from 9 years to 3 months. Her favorite subject is History, favorite activities include reading and extreme dot-to-dot and she would like to someday be a science teacher. Her biggest fear is that she won’t be able to play with her siblings. Catherine’s parents would like people to know that “Catherine has had to endure so much pain, but she has shown how strong and brave she can be!” Supporting the Arthritis Foundation is important to her family because they would be grateful for a cure so other children do not need to endure what Catherine has experienced. Catherine has said “Yes” to participating as a Champion for Art for Arthritis the last 6 years and has enjoyed working with the wonderful mentor artists. You should say Yes, too, because today, more than ever, the arthritis community needs your support to continue improving treatment protocols, providing resources such as JA Power Packs and Camp Cambria and supporting research for a cure.
